Mercedes-Benz 540 K Cabriolet A — a rare expression of automotive elegance

Introduced in 1936 as the successor to the 500 K, the Mercedes-Benz 540 K was one of the most prestigious and powerful automobiles of its time. Its 5.4-litre supercharged straight-eight engine developed 115 hp in normal operation and up to 180 hp with the supercharger engaged, giving this imposing grand tourer remarkable performance for a car of the 1930s.

Like its predecessor, the 540 K was offered with several body styles produced by Mercedes-Benz at Sindelfingen. Among them, the Cabriolet A held a special place.

Shorter and sportier than the larger convertibles designed to accommodate more passengers, the Cabriolet A was an elegant two-seater created primarily for the pleasure of driving. Its silhouette was defined by a long bonnet, a low windscreen, generously shaped fenders and a particularly elegant rear section, into which the spare wheel was integrated. Designed and built at Sindelfingen, this body was among the most refined ever offered on the 540 K chassis.

The production of these automobiles remained largely handcrafted. Although Mercedes-Benz already had a modern industrial organisation, its most exclusive bodies received an exceptionally high level of attention at Sindelfingen. The panels were carefully fitted, then the body was extensively prepared and finished by hand before painting and assembly. Each car could therefore feature details and finishes tailored to the wishes of its first owner.

Production of the 540 K remained relatively limited, with 419 examples built between 1936 and 1939, in a variety of body styles and configurations. The Cabriolet A was itself extremely rare, and the sporting version built during the mid-1930s accounted for only a few dozen examples. Very few have survived.

Several of these automobiles were commissioned by particularly wealthy and influential owners. Their histories reflect the prestige enjoyed by the 540 K: some were ordered by aristocrats or prominent industrialists, while others were exported to the United States or Great Britain before eventually becoming part of important private collections and appearing at prestigious concours d’élégance around the world.

Today, the 540 K Cabriolet A is still regarded as one of Mercedes-Benz's most elegant creations before the Second World War. Its combination of performance, refinement and exceptional proportions explains why the surviving examples have become highly prized automobiles in the world of classic cars.
