History of the car written by Mr Bernd Loosen, Thank You!

This unique Mercedes-Benz 630K, chassis number 32019, features a short chassis and a convertible body. Under the hood is the Type 630 supercherged engine number 60434. According to factory documents, the car was delivered to British Mercedes-Benz, Ltd. in London on April 13, 1927.

The first owner is unknown, but we do know that the car was delivered to the renowned Thomas Harrington Ltd. in Brighton, where it received the sporty four-seater convertible coupé bodywork that can still be seen on the chassis today.

The car survived the war years and was owned by several prominent British collectors in the following years. It belonged to a certain A.B. Kensington until 1953, and according to the notes taken by the founder and then-president of the English Mercedes-Benz Club, who inspected the car while it was stationary in Weybridge on July 25, 1953, the car was missing parts at the time, and its condition was described as dilapidated.

The details are somewhat contradictory: the car is recorded as having been sold on November 29, 1953, to a Mr. D.E. Howard living in London W1, who had it towed to his home.

However, the website of the Audrain Automobile Museum in Newport, RI, states that the car—evidently restored—entered the Mercedes-Benz Club London Concours d'Elegance on July 7, 1953, with D.E. Howard at the wheel, and was awarded the prize for best car in its class.

After 1953, nothing more is heard of this car until 1970, when it was owned by a certain W. Morley, residing in Baldeck, Hertfordshire, north of London.

The 630K Sport Cabriolet Harrington was offered for sale by London dealer Mike Carter Sales Ltd. at the 16th auction on June 9, 1978, at Alexandra Palace, where it was sold to a bidder based in Thailand. It was then shipped to Bangkok, where it was immediately seized by customs and placed in storage.

A wealthy Thai industrialist and collector, Mr. Kobsak Chinawongwatana, used his connections with the Thai government in the 1980s to secure and acquire the car from the customs warehouse. It remained in the family's possession for nearly twenty years. A sale advertisement appears in the July 1994 issue of the British Motor Sport Magazine, advertised by used car dealer William Loughran of Preston, Lancashire. The advertisement includes a color photograph of the car and states that the 630K Harrington had been completely restored over a period of two to three years. The price is available upon request.

In issue 3 of 2002 of Kienzle-Reisen, there is a photo report of "a car that remained in Thailand until 2003," and a trip to Bangkok in April 2002 by well-known car restorer Klaus Kienle and his son Alexander. They went there at the invitation of Kobsak Chinawongwatana to inspect the Mercedes-Benz 630K Harrington.

There, they found the car to be almost complete, but completely worn and dilapidated. Nothing was working, and a complete restoration was necessary. Mr. Chinawongwatana therefore turned to Kienle Automobiltechnik GmbH in Ditzingen.

After its restoration, the car was the centerpiece of a temporary classic car exhibition at Seacon Square, one of Bangkok's main shopping malls.

Then purchased by the Symbolic Motor Car Company in the late 2000s, the car was imported to the United States. Reconditioned by the Mercedes-Benz Classic Centre, it is now offered for sale.

In 2009, the car belonged to the Blackhawk Collection in Danville, California.

At the Pebble Beach auction on August 16, 2009, Gooding & Company estimated the car's value at between USD 600,000 and USD 800,000, but it remained unsold.

In 2010, the car was offered for sale again, this time at the "Exceptional Motorcars and Automobilia" auction presented by Bonhams. The car's estimate was $450,000 to $550,000.

The car also remained unsold, having failed to reach the minimum asking price.

At the 43rd annual Scottsdale auction in early January 2014, the Harrington-bodied 630K was again offered by Barrett-Jackson, and this time sold for $715,000, purchased by Nicholas Schorsch of Newport, Rhode Island, owner of the Audrain Museum.

On August 17, 2017, the black 630K competed in the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in California, entered by the Audrain Museum and driven by Nicholas Schorsch.

It was then restored once again, and during this time, it is said that remnants of the original green paint were discovered on the car.

The 630K Harrington Coupé was repainted in the same shade of green. The red seats and interior were upholstered in dark green leather, matching the body color.

Although the chrome hubcaps were retained, all chrome moldings and trim were removed.

A new soft top was also installed. Initially black, a dark beige color was chosen to complement the car's new green paint.

This is how the 630K Coupé Décapotable appeared at the 2024 Pebble Beach Concours d'Élégance.

This Harrington-bodied 630K Sport Tourer is still in the possession of the Musée Audrain in 2025, but it is not currently on display.
