Horch 951A Pullman Cabriolet — elegance in the service of representation
Introduced in the late 1930s, the Horch 951A belonged to the most prestigious automobiles produced by Horch and ranked among the great German luxury cars of its era.
Its imposing chassis carried a 4.9-litre straight-eight engine developing 120 hp, allowing this nearly three-ton automobile to reach approximately 130 km/h. The 951A retained the long wheelbase of the 851 while benefiting from technical developments intended to improve both comfort and performance, including an overdrive gear that reduced engine speed at higher road speeds.
The 951A was offered with several different body styles. Among the most impressive was the Pullman Cabriolet, a long and imposing automobile designed for prestige and representational use.
The bodywork represented here was built by Gläser, the renowned Dresden coachbuilder whose creations were known for their elegant proportions and high level of craftsmanship. The long bonnet, generously shaped fenders, spacious passenger compartment and low soft-top profile gave the Horch a particularly imposing presence when the roof was lowered.
The term “Pullman” reflected a design philosophy centred on spaciousness and passenger comfort. These automobiles were not simply built to transport their occupants; they were intended to be seen and to reflect the status of their owner.
Production of the 951A coincided with the final years before the Second World War. Like many large German automobiles of the period, some were used as representative cars by prominent individuals, government authorities and institutions. Their histories were subsequently deeply affected by the war, and surviving examples followed very different paths before eventually entering the world of historic car collecting.
Today, the Horch 951A remains one of the most impressive examples of the craftsmanship of the German automobile industry before the war. Its refined engineering, imposing dimensions and, above all, the quality of its coachbuilt bodies make it a particularly evocative representation of the golden age of large luxury automobiles in the 1930s.
The Ilario 1:43 scale model
References IL192, IL193 and IL194 represent this elegant Pullman Cabriolet body built by Gläser, in different interpretations corresponding to the historic automobiles represented.
Each model has been created with particular attention to the proportions of the bodywork, its characteristic lines and the many details that give this large Horch its distinctive personality.
Through these different versions, Ilario pays tribute to one of the most imposing and elegant representative automobiles of the late 1930s.
